The history of Wuhan can date back 3,500 years ago. In the period of the Warring States (770 B.C. - 221 B.C.), this area was the land of the State of Chu and the brilliant Chu culture can be found everywhere in Wuhan today. In the Han Dynasty, Hanyang had been a fairly busy port. In the 3rd century AD, walls were built to protect Hanyang and Wuchang cities, which marked the establishment of Wuhan City. In the Qing Dynasty, Hankou, one of the three small cities in Wuhan was reputed to be "one of the four famous trading towns" in China. In the late 1800"s, railroads were extended on a north-south axis through Wuhan city, which then became an important transshipment point between rail and river traffic. Wuhan is also the birthplace of the Chinese democratic revolution. In 1911, the Xinhai Revolution rose up in Wuchang and the last feudalistic dynasty- the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was overthrown.
