The Teatro Goldoni is one of the theaters of downtown Florence. Located within a large urban island, between Via Romana, Via dei Serragli and Via Santa Maria, which was previously occupied by the convent of St. Vincent of Annalena. In 1807 the impresario Louis Gargani started the ambitious project to make this area a center for entertainment and amusement of Florentines, through a great Italian theater and an arena with an adjoining ballroom summer festivals. So, in that portion of the block to Via dei Serragli, were built the arena and dance hall, designed by Antonio Corazzi and Ridolfo Castinelli and in the portion to the Via Romana, the great Italian theater with antlers built by the architect Giuseppe Del Rosso (1817). The theater was inaugurated April 17, 1817 with a work by Carlo Goldoni and a ballet by Jean Dauberval, the famous French dancer and choreographer of the eighteenth century. After some shows, especially after the staging of Query by Meredith Monk in September 1976, the serious structural and safety problems were found, that led to final closure of the theatre. The theater was reopened in 1998 with a famous setting of Orfeo by Monteverdi, directed by Luca Ronconi and now is used primarily as a theatrical space dedicated to dance performances by the Ballet of the City and other companies.
